Your maps must be large enough to accommodate whatever element of the tale is going place on them. Battle layouts might constrict your players, forcing them to battle in close quarters, or they can be spacious, allowing your ranged players to shine the brightest. It takes experience to get the hang of map size, and new DMs would be wise to try some pre-gen adventures to acquire a sense of how maps operate as well as how your players prefer to play.
Maps of Various Types
In D&D, maps come in a variety of varieties. Dungeons & Dragons maps benefit from categorization depending on their intended usage. We have maps for the overworld, which depict continents, cities, and kingdoms; maps for the adventure, which show towns, dungeons, or places of exploration; and maps for warfare. These may be your group's battle mat, or they could be separate encounters tailored to the region your players are in.
The majority of maps are general enough that they can be simply utilized by dm once the dd encounters software is completed. The subterranean maps have fractured walls, making them unsuitable for dungeon crawls but ideal for large fights.
