Layla Hassan is the protagonist of Assassin's Creed's modern-day plot, and she connects the two games. Layla works for Abstergo, the modern-day Templars, in Origins. She is on an archeological excavation in Egypt hunting for Isu artifacts when she comes upon the mummy of Bayek, and later, Aya. They were the first Assassins. Layla sees this as an opportunity to demonstrate her abilities to Abstergo and gain access to the coveted Animus Project, a promotion she has previously been denied.
All of this is to indicate that players will undoubtedly face Layla on another mission, but she will not be the innocent girl attempting to prove herself in Assassin's Creed Origins. She won't be the character striving to discover her position in the universe in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and she won't have suddenly mastered this staff in Assassin's Creed Ragnarok. Layla's route seems to be a dark one, with much of her tale mirroring a "dark" Chosen One path, and there are plenty of evidence to support this. During this time, Layla's demeanor changes, becoming more hostile, and her friends caution her not to follow Aletheia's directions. Layla completely disregards them. After a little assault by Abstergo, Layla and her crew successfully open the Great Seal to Atlantis and discover a holographic Aletheia, who says that in the past she had assisted Kassandra in exploring simulations of Atlantis in order for Kassandra to learn how to wield the magical staff. Aletheia advises that Layla use the Animus to relive Kassandra's memories so that she, too, can learn how to unleash the full power of the staff.
