Hollis' company is designing a die-cut brass paillette wall for a new Miami hotel's welcome room. Gold ceiling paint will transmit the appearance of vintage brass in another hotel Hollis is creating in Seattle, while polished brass will shine out in plumbing, drawer handles, and exposed hardware. Metallics transcend trends and may be used with a wide range of materials and media. "It's wonderful to have a metallic piece with a certain form in a more modern setting, something a bit more structural or sculptural," says Lori Gilder, an interior designer based in Los Angeles. Gilder recently repaired a client's carved Louis chairs, metallicizing the frames and upholstering them in a metallic sheen cloth.
Gold tones are sometimes misunderstood as overly garish or just appropriate for drawer handles, but as we seek toward spaces that provide a feeling of comfort, gold can bring depth and charm to a space while also acting as a neutral paint color. Gold paint does not have to be dazzling and garish; golden colours may range from deep camels to mineral ochres, brilliant yellows, and, of course, gilded brilliance. Many of the most memorable yellow rooms, in fact, have walls painted a more golden than yellow hue, since rooms with gold paint colors tend to have soft light and a feeling of richness.
