Darth Sidious requested that Viceroy Nute Gunray provide him a small fleet of Munificent-class star frigates to assist Bane with his next mission: kidnapping Jedi Master Bolla Ropal and have him merge the holocron with the Kyber memory crystal, which was held by the Rodian. Bane launched a ground strike on Devaron's surface, capturing both Ropal and the kyber crystal. [25] However, a fleet of Republic ships headed by Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker arrived on Devaron, and the following combat destroyed most frigates, leaving just the vessel with Bane and Ropal on board. Skywalker had his fleet destroy the Separatist flagship's hyperdrive, preventing it from entering hyperspace. Bane then tortured Ropal in an effort to get him to unlock it. However, before he could open the holocron, Ropal perished as a result of the horrific suffering. Bane then devised a plot to compel Skywalker and his apprentice to open the holocron, much to Gunray's relief. Bane planned an ambush for Skywalker, Tano, Rex, and their forces on the gun deck. [25]
