I'm searching for a technique to add game overlays. Perhaps it isn't possible. Perhaps I haven't discovered it yet. The bilinear filter appeals to me. On any emulator, that's generally the only filter I use. I also employ my own'scanline' overlay. However, it does not generate scanline. To be honest, I don't get the scanline infatuation. I never observed scanlines on CRTs until they were on their final legs. I'm still using CRT and don't notice any scanlines. The gap between 'pixels' on a CRT has always been visible to me. This is what my custom'scanline.png' file does in a way. I had also altered the Confluence skin in Krypton to tile this on top of classic TV episodes. It looked good. That is one kind of overlay. I sincerely hope we receive at least that. I'm hoping for more overlays that can act as borders around video that doesn't cover the screen...which is dependent on us being able to size/scale the video as we see fit. Thanks. P.S. What exactly is an overlay image?
So what I meant by overlay was having a space where you can put a picture and it will sit on top of everything without being impacted by blur, bloom, or other effects. These are my snes9x scanlines with bloom (50 percent opacity) (shader): You can't even tell scanlines are on.
This prompted me to do some scanline overlays. These scanlines are more dynamic than the previous overlays, with bright lines being noticeably broader than dark lines. So yet, none of the lightweight shaders have allowed me to attain the same amount of beam width dynamics. There are certainly already too many of them, but perhaps someone will find them useful. These scanlines are pretty strong, similar to what you'd see on an xVM or 31kHz CRT, so be prepared to ramp up your backlight! The overlays range from little/no bloom/glow (version 1) to a lot of bloom/glow (version 2). (version 3).

When I set RetroPie to 240p, it appears the same, but less crisp. Although emulation is not the same as original hardware, I am attempting to replicate the experience as nearly as feasible. EDIT: I was having difficulties with the resolution of the default overlay. The lower resolution works, but not to the level I had hoped. There is way too much of a rolling effect going on. Because the same thing was happening with shaders, I decided to experiment with an overlay. Well, thanks for your assistance!

RetroArch, for the uninitiated, is not an emulator in and of itself. Rather, it includes plugins known as âCoresâ that allow you to imitate a variety of legacy systems, such as the Nintendo DS, so you can have all of your emulators and games in one spot. The RetroArch 1.9.1 update is now available on Google Play. RetroArch Plus, a 64-bit version suggested for Android 8.0+ devices, and RetroArch, designed for older, less capable devices, are both available on the Play Store. You may also get the software straight from RetroArch's website. This version includes the âCore Downloaderâ, which is absent from the Play Store versions.

I thought I'd share an intriguing method for applying a scanline mask to achieve a decent image on my flatscreen using VLC and an inexpensive capture card. Going back to what I mentioned, the cropping of the screen at 5x integer scaling irritated me, so I experimented with non-integer scaling and think I've found something I like. I put this on the retropie boards - it's old ground, but whatever! THE ISSUE Most console systems and arcade games from the 1980s to the mid 1990s output in raster resolution, which appears to be 320x224 nearly always. You have a problem with a recent 1080p screen since there is no way to divide the vertical number (224) into 1080.
@segaages There will very certainly be additional reactions to this, but here are a few ideas off the top of my head: To begin, when people mention CRT-PI, they are typically referring to DaveJ's RetroArch shader. This is not an overlay, however you may be referring to one with the same name. The difference may not appear to be large when viewed on the screen, yet it can have a huge impact. An overlay is an image that is blended with the video picture (usually with some transparency and/or color). When used together, the overlay can fill up unused space with artwork or utilize transparency to generate brighter and darker regions to simulate scanlines and shadow mask effects.
