Mami considers killing herself or committing suicide in order to avoid becoming a witch herself. Mami's connection with Kyouko is detailed extensively, including their time as mentor and trainee fighting witches together in Mitakihara. It is revealed that Mami's biggest fear is being alone, and her deepest regret is utilizing her desire to rescue herself rather than her family. Mami intends to die with Sayaka once she becomes a witch.
When Mami rescues Sayaka from the witch Elsa Maria, she admits to her junior that she is a selfish and lonely girl who can't tolerate being alone. Mami chooses to step down as Sayaka's "justice champion." She wants Sayaka to be her partner again, which Sayaka admits makes her happy, just as her Soul Gem bursts, transforming her into the witch Oktavia von Seckendorff. Mami exits the barrier, and Kyubey explains to her that Sayaka became a witch due to the actions of Kyoko, Homura, and Mami herself. When Mami discovers the reality about the magical girl system, she reflects on her previous experiences with other magical girls. In this flashback, she mentions her interaction with Michiru Kazusa from Kazumi Magica, the new magical girls from the first volume, and Kyoko's history with Mami. Mami is so upset that she resolves to die with Oktavia. When Kyoko arrives to stop her, she attacks her without holding back her power. It seems that she binds up Kyoko and murders her.
