Illinois state legislative (1834â1842)Lincoln won his second state house election in 1834, this time as a Whig, defeating a formidable Whig opponent. Following that, he served four years in the Illinois House of Representatives, representing Sangamon County. He advocated for the Illinois and Michigan Canal's development and subsequently served as a Canal Commissioner. [66] He voted to extend suffrage beyond white landowners to all white men, but maintained an anti-slavery and anti-abolition attitude. In 1837, he said, "[The] Institution of slavery is built on both injustice and poor policy, but the propagation of abolition beliefs serves to exacerbate rather than alleviate its faults." He mirrored Henry Clay's support for the American Colonization Society, which promoted abolition with the settlement of freed slaves in Liberia.
Abraham Lincoln was born in Hardin, Kentucky, on February 12, 1809, to Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Later in life, the family relocated to Indiana, where his mother died. In 1818, Thomas remarried. Abraham had a strong bond with his stepmother, Sarah Bush Johnston, despite the fact that his connection with his father remained tense throughout his childhood. In November 1842, Lincoln married Mary Todd. The couple have four children together.
Lincoln was born in a wilderness hut three miles (5 kilometers) south of Hodgenville, Kentucky, and was transported to a farm in the adjacent Knob Creek valley at the age of two. His earliest recollections are of this house, most notably of a sudden flood that swept away the corn and pumpkin seeds he assisted his father in planting. His father, Thomas Lincoln, was a descendant of a weaver's apprentice who came to Massachusetts from England in 1637. Though Thomas was not as rich as some of his Lincoln forefathers, he was a hardy pioneer. He married Nancy Hanks on June 12, 1806. The United States entered instant mourning upon President Abraham Lincoln's death at the Petersen House at 7:22 a.m. His body was brought to the White House in a simple wood casket. Following an autopsy, mourners paid their respects at the White House, the Capitol, and down Pennsylvania Avenue in a spectacular parade. Finally, on Friday morning, April 21, Lincoln's remains were transported to the same depot where the president-elect had arrived four years before for his inauguration.
