This animal is a carnivore and is one of the earliest dinosaurs to have been identified with a partly piscivorous diet. Paleontologists uncovered stomach contents and bones from a juvenile Iguanodon bernissartensis, including scales from the fish Scheenstia mantelli. It may have employed gastroliths to aid with digesting, as shown by fossils. This animal's primary source of food is fish, which it takes live from water sources in its environment. Baryonyx is found in close proximity to rivers and lakes, but has not been reported in estuaries or maritime habitats. It captures prey with its powerful jaws and conical teeth, snatching fish with rapid swishing movements of its snout. When hunting, the Baryonyx uses its nose to detect prey movement; its snout is covered with sensory pits that aid the animal in determining the location and direction of its prey. This enables the Baryonyx to ambush unsuspecting fish in stealth. Because it cannot chew, smaller animals may simply be consumed whole; bigger prey must be ripped apart with the claws.
