Legends from Asia allude to vampiric beings such as Lamia and Kali. Skeletons from the sixth century Southwell, England, have been discovered, with iron spikes pinning down the ankles, pelvis, wrists, chest, and neck. In 1597, King James published Daemonologie, a dissertation on witchcraft in which he expressed his opinion that demons may possess both the living and the dead. He detailed the idea of incubi and succubae possessing the body of the departed and walking the earth under his taxonomy of demons. When the devil borrows a dead body, it appears visibly and naturally to any man who converses with them, and any substance within the body remains intolerably cold to others whom they abuse. [78]
Vampire protection and defense
Of course, the best method to deal with vampires is to keep them away in the first place. In Europe a few centuries ago, this was often achieved by staking suspected vampires in their graves; the goal was to physically pin the vampire to the dirt, and the chest was selected as the trunk of the corpse. This custom was eventually mirrored in popular literature, which depicted vampires being dispatched with wooden stakes. There was no need to use wood; according to tradition, vampires, like djinn (genies) and many other supernatural beings, hated iron, hence an iron bar would be more effective than a wooden stake.
