Aslan Jade Callenreese, also known as Ash Lynx, was a runaway who was rescued from the streets of New York City and fostered by Dino Golzine, the mafia's infamous godfather. Ash, now 17 and the leader of his own gang, conducts an investigation into the enigmatic "Banana Fish"âthe same two words his older brother Griffin has murmured since returning from the Iraq War. His investigations are hampered, however, when Dino sends his men after Ash in an underground pub where he hides. At the pub, Ash's friend Skip introduces him to Japanese photographers Shunichi Ibe and his assistant, Eiji Okumura, who are covering American street gangs. Shorter Wong, one of Ash's buddies, phones to warn him about Dino, interrupting their talk. Dino's men raid the pub soon after, kidnapping Skip and Eiji in the ensuing mayhem. The origins of Ash and Shorter Wong are told in this prequel. When Golzine refuses to pay his bail, Ash is taken to a juvenile detention center, where he is placed in a cell alongside Shorter. Shortly after Ash's arrival, rumors swirl that Arthur has enlisted the help of an assassin in the prison. Shorter believes the assassin is Ash after seeing him beat off Ricardo and Frankie, two prisoners who appear to be targeting Ash for prison rape. Knowing that being under the protection of another inmate would complicate any attempt on his life, Ash flirts with Ricardo to drive Frankie to make a move, and tells Shorter that he knew Frankie was an assassin sent by Arthur to kill him. Shorter tells Ash that his manipulation makes him no different than the individuals he despises, and Ash lashes out, prompting him to open up to Shorter. Shorter notes that it was the first time he ever saw Ash laugh, and that Ash's face when he smiled was "angelic." When Shorter is released from prison several months later, Ash happily bids him goodbye as a friend; Shorter notes that it was the first time he ever saw Ash laugh and that Ash's face when he smiled was "angelic."
